St Philip Neri Collegium

A Bridging Year for Seminary Candidates

The Collegium is a propaedeutic seminary founded by the Oratory. Candidates who express a vocation to the priesthood, but need a bridging qualification, can achieve this here, alongside valuable formation. The courses of training are aimed at the development of practical skills, language proficiency, knowledge of the fundamental teachings of the Church, and spiritual and liturgical formation.

Education and training is offered in four main focal streams:

Human Development

  • English: Reading; speaking and writing skills; study methods; examination proficiency; essay writing.
  • Enrichment courses focusing on communication, interpersonal and social skills.
  • Sports Activities: St Philips' soccer team.

Spiritual & Faith Development

  • Prayer: Public and private prayer; The Divine Office; introduction to mental prayer.
  • Liturgical singing including voice training and liturgical musical repertoire.

Academic Development

  • Introduction to the Bible: Old and New Testament.
  • Introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and a solid grounding in the teachings of the Catholic Faith.

Pastoral Exposure

  • Participation in the Parish life of St Bernadette's.
  • Exposure to ministry in the Walmer Township.

Upgrading of Matric Results (Optional)

The Curriculum makes provision for students wishing to upgrade and rewrite matriculation subjects. Provision for this part of the course is by arrangement with the local Adult Education Centre.
